Lance Stroll

Lance Stroll to Mercedes?

by Martin Blessing

With the summer break in full effect, the ever famous ‘Silly Season’ is in full force. For those not in the know, ‘Silly Season’ is where Formula 1 teams are seeking to either sign new drivers or axe existing ones. Typically speaking, we usually have an idea as to who will go where before the crazy negotiations take place. Examples being Russell potentially joining Mercedes, with Bottas being pushed out of his seat. However, former Formula 1 world champion, Jacques Villeneuve has a rather unique view on one drivers future, namely Lance Stroll.

Jacques Villeneuve has suggested that the Canadian driver, could be signed by Mercedes, with Bottas going the other way to Aston Martin. A rather bold statement, Villeneuve believes Stroll is the right fit for Mercedes, particularly partnering with Lewis Hamilton.

For me he [Bottas] could move to Aston Martin in place of Lance Stroll, who would go to Mercedes

Stroll senior’s dream, very close to Toto Wolff, is to see his son winning Championships. And Toto needs a place for Valtteri.

For sure Hamilton doesn’t like Russell as a team-mate. Better someone like Bottas, who doesn’t bother him.

Lance Stroll’s driving career can largely be attributed to his father, Lawrence and his presence within the sport. Lawrence Stroll was a major sponsor for the Williams outfit during 2017 to 2019. His investment however, came with a caveat. That was to ensure his son, Lance, could drive for the team. Controversies were no doubt met with Lance’s arrival as a driver, with many casting doubt on his ability. However, Lance has proved that his driving skill was enough to warrant a podium in his rookie year.

Fast forward to 2019 and then known Force India team was on the brink of collapse. Lawrence Stroll saved the racing outfit from administration. However, in Formula 1’s worst kept secret, it was almost inevitable he would move his son along from Williams to drive for the newly named, Racing Point team.
